But you can’t win if you don’t play. And the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has announced that it is now accepting applications for its annual moose permit lottery.

The deadline for on-line registration isn’t until May 14, and the lottery itself will be held on June 14 in Presque Isle.

But why wait? Apply now at mefishwildlife.com — it only takes a few minutes — and you can spend the next four months carefully planning the moose hunt you’re hoping to win.

According to the DIF&W, applicants from 2013 or 2012 will find that all of their pertinent information will load automatically into their 2014 on-line registration form. Just type your name and date of birth and the computer will search for your previous application. Then you can make any necessary changes and complete the process even more simply than before.

Applicants will again receive a “bonus point,” or extra chance in the lottery, for each consecutive year they’ve been entering unsuccessfully all the way back to 1998.

If you’ve been an unsuccessful applicant for one to five years, you receive one bonus point per year. Applicants could also earn two points per year for years 6-10, three per year for years 11-15 and 10 per year for each year more than 15.
