Fall BDN Maine Outdoors publication hitting stands now

When we debuted our new free publication — BDN Maine Outdoors — back in March, we were eager to showcase some of the reasons readers love spending time in Maine’s woods, on our waters, and exploring our mountains.

This morning, I’m happy to announce that the third edition of our stand-alone outdoors magazine has begun hitting newsstands; our hard-working circulation crew will continue stocking stores for the next two weeks, and at that time, you should be able to find it in any store that carries our daily newspaper.

What will you find in the September issue of this quarterly publication?

Well, first off, you’ll notice a stunning cover photo by Mark Picard, featuring pair of moose under brilliant fall foliage.

Inside, stories are varied and interesting. Among the offerings:

  • A humorous tale that illustrates what Maine moose hunters have said for decades: It’s all fun and games until you pull the trigger. Then the work begins.
  • An update on the Great Works Dam removal and the Penobscot River Restoration Project.
  • A profile of Maine author Paul Doiron, whose latest book, “Bad Little Falls,” hit stores in August.
  • A look at the money that some are making by selling their collectible duck decoys at auction.
  • An update on Moosehead Lake ATV trails.
  • A quick peak at some iconic Maine sporting camps.
  • A Q-and-A with taxidermist John Dykstra of Northland Taxidermy.
  • Non-traditional ways to enjoy Maine’s foliage season.
  • A series of charts that explore Maine’s deer hunt, by the numbers.
  • The quarterly newsletter of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine.

As I mentioned at the top of this blog post, BDN Maine Outdoors is free. We hope you pick one up, take it to your hunting camp, and spend some time perusing.

We’re already busy planning our December issue, and have some great features on tap.

And as always, let us know what you think. Tell us what you want more of. What you want less of. What the Maine outdoors means to you.
