Don’t snooze: Moose permit lottery deadline is today

Here’s your last warning: If you have any intention of going moose hunting (on your own permit, rather than as a tag-along or sub-permittee), you’d better find yourself a computer.

The deadline for the state-run moose permit lottery is looming. Seriously looming. Like, TODAY looming.

You’ve got until 11:59 p.m. to get the permit form filled out. You can access that form via the state’s MOSES system, which you can find at mefishwildlife.com.

This year 3,725 permits will be awarded to successful applicants. According to state law, no more than 10 percent of those permits — 372 this year — can be given to non-resident hunters.

Successful applicants will also be required to purchase the actual moose permit. Maine residents will pay $52 for that permit. Non-residents will be charged $585.

This year’s lottery will take place at 4 p.m. June 23 at Oquossoc Marine. The drawing will be the centerpiece of the three-day Rangeley Lakes Region Moose Lottery Festival.

Wondering when you might want to hunt? Here’s the breakdown of the 2012 seasons:

  • Sept. 24-29, with hunting allowed in Wildlife Management Districts 1-6, 11 and 19, a total of 840 permits in play.
  • Oct. 8-23, in WMDs 1-14, 17, 18, 19, 27 and 28, with 1,750 permits up for grabs.
  • Nov. 5-10, in WMDs 1-8, 10 and 11, with 935 permits to be allotted.
  • Oct. 29-Nov. 24 (with Oct. 27 included for Maine residents) in WMDs 15, 16, 22, 23, 25 and 26, with 200 permits up for grabs.
