L.L. Bean plans camping weekend

The folks at L.L. Bean regularly give us outdoor shoppers reasons to head to Freeport for the day.

They hold concerts in the summer. They hold clinics and host walk-on adventures. And every so often, they focus on a particular outdoor theme for an entire weekend.

On May 18-20, the state’s iconic outfitter do so again, staging a series of activities and demonstrations as part of L.L. Bean’s Camping Weekend.

What can you expect? Well, if you want to learn about Lyme disease prevention, you’re in luck. If you need to know more about water filtration, Leave No Trace ethics, camp cooking, or knot tying, you’re covered.

And if you want to build your own Swiss Army knife — I know, that sounds pretty cool — you can do that, too.

The company will also stage geocaching treasure hunts, a 25-foot climbing wall will be set up, and you’ll get a close look at live birds of prey.

If you’ve wanted to see the massive L.L. Bean “Bootmobile,” you can do so after 10 a.m. on May 19.

And finally, all of the products in the company’s 100th anniversary showcase will be on display. My personal favorite: The handcrafted Thomas fly rods that were created for L.L. Bean’s birthday by Brewer rodmaker Steve Campbell.

Sounds like a fun weekend for the whole family.
