Although this photo doesn’t qualify as a golden oldie — it’s not the classic black-and-white version we often share, after all — it seemed appropriate to share it today for one reason.
This photo was taken on Aug. 1, 2007, nine years ago today, and shows a scene that I’d bet is being repeated in some form on docks all over Maine on this beautiful, sunny day.
The kids pictured in this photo, taken by BDN legend Walter Griffin, are are much older now. Here’s hoping that they still find enjoyment sitting on a pier, dropping a line in the water, and waiting for the mackerel to strike.
Unfortunately, Griffin, who covered the midcoast for the BDN for 33 years — and once taught President Bill Clinton how to eat a lobster — died two years ago, at age 68.
Rest assured, his former colleagues here still tell “Walter stories,” and appreciate the great work he did for so long.
