Summer option for young ‘North Woods Law’ fans: Camp North Woods

If your child is a huge fan of the Animal Planet TV show “North Woods Law” and can’t stop talking about the exploits of the Maine game wardens who serve as its stars, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has got some great news for you.

The department will unveil Camp North Woods this summer, and your kids are invited to attend.

There is a catch: A limited number of spots are available, and a lottery will be held to determine which children get to attend. More on that in a minute.

According to a DIF&W press release, Camp North Woods will teach campers (and their families) outdoor skills and the importance of sustaining the state’s natural resources. The formation of the camp was spurred by the success of “North Woods Law,” and its popularity among the state’s children.

The camp will be staged at the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond near Bethel.

Camp staff and instructors will include some of the game wardens who appear on North Woods Law, DIF&W fisheries and wildlife biologists, recreational safety coordinators, information and education staff, and 4-H center staff.

An all-boys camp will be held July 15-19, and an all-girls camp is set for July 29-Aug. 2.

The camp will accommodate 48 campers each week, according to the release. Those campers will be joined by their parents or guardians for the last two days of the camp, during which a family field day and overnight will be held.

So, what do you think? Do your kids want to attend? The lottery will be held on June 8, and here’s what you’ll need to do in order to apply:

The camp is open to those who will be at least 8 years old by July 25, and no older than 12 on Aug. 2. Each child is only allowed to enter the drawing once. The entry fee is $5, and proceeds will be used to support Camp North Woods.

The deadline for entry is June 1.

If selected, the fee to attend Camp North Woods is $400.
