Ice angler alert: Allagash winter camping registration set for Saturday

Avid ice anglers hoping to score a coveted Allagash Wilderness Waterway winter camping pass will have to act fast on Saturday, Dec. 14, when registration opens.

A total of 48 sites at Chamberlain Bridge and Kellogg Brook are available, but Matthew LaRoche, superintendent of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, expects most sites will be rented out by noon on Saturday, according to a Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry press release.

To make sure you get a site, LaRoche advises prospective campers to arrive at Chamberlain Bridge, where the reservations will be taken, before 8 a.m. that day.

Campsite rentals are $50 (plus an 8 percent meal and lodging tax) per month. Eight sites are reserved in the Chamberlain Bridge parking lot for transient use for the regular camping rate of $4 per person per night ($8 for non-residents).

The sites will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
