Outdoor Family Fun Day on tap

Parents looking for a way to introduce their kids to a variety of outdoor activities will have that chance on Saturday, June 2, as the Penobcot County Conservation Association will host its annual Outdoor Family Fun Day at the Brewer clubhouse.

The program will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with an hour-long break for lunch from noon until 1 p.m.

The best part: There’s no charge for any of the activities. (Hot dogs will be available for purchase at lunch).

Kids under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Among the scheduled activities: A Trailblazer Adventure Day Program with the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance; Enjoying the Penobscot River in a 28-foot canoe with the Penobscot Riverkeepers; “What’s in the Pond Water?” a program featuring Ruth Perry, the Maine Science Lady; Fly-casting and fly-tying instruction with the Penobscot Fly Fishers; Making woodblock prints with representatives of the Penobscot River Restoration Project; Geocaching with the PCCA; air rifle basics with the PCCA; Archery for Beginners with the Maine Bowhunters Association; and Meet the Trappers, with the Maine Trappers Association.

In addition, Cabela’s and the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance have donated spinning rods to give away, and L.L. Bean has donated a fly rod package and a backpack that will be given to lucky winners.

And if you’re a fan of “North Woods Law,” the Animal Planet TV show featuring Maine game wardens, you’re in luck: One of the “stars” of the series will be on hand during the afternoon, and he’ll have his canine partner with him.

The clubhouse is located at 570 North Main Street in Brewer. For more information about the program or the PCCA, go to conservationassociation.org.
